TUTORIAL (F.A.Q)

Question(1):

-Is it illegal to possess backups. What do you thing?

Answer:

-No, not at all. As a matter of fact companies encourage you to make backups of their software. Use your backup for everyday use and save your original media in a safe place for future use or to make another backup in case your present backup media fails to respond or to run. Allthough more and more software companies, anymore, tend to replace your worned out media with a new copy of it, it's still a husttle to wait for the beaurocracy, delivery etc, and you'll find that in most cases even cost a lot more in delivery than to have burned your own backup.

The illegal part is when you make a backup for someone else with or even without profit. You can't make a backup to sale it, nor to rent it, nor to make a gift with it. Cyber-HOT-Line suggests not to make illegal copies. Support the programmers' efforts.

Question(2):

-How can I make a 100% working backup?

Answer:

-Here are some newbie stuff usually come up to Cyber-HOT-Line's attention.

Patch Terminology
No-CD
This is a Patch or Executable which enables you to play the game without the need for the CD. In most cases a game serial is still required to play the game!
Generic No-CD
This is usually a Patch which enables you to play the game without the need for the CD. The word Generic means that the patch can be used on more than one version or update of the game.
Fixed EXE
This is a Fixed Executable which bypasses the CD Protection in the game. Usually the CD, or a backup of it, is still required to be able to play the game.
CD-Copy
These are instructions to create a working backup of your original CD. Keep in mind to get the correct language & version of the required file(s).
CD-Info
This is information about the Game CD.
Archive Software
Most files (Patch & Executable Archives) are packed using ZIP but it also happens that they are packed using RAR or ACE.

Sometimes an ACE or RAR archive exists inside an ZIP archive, this is usually done to get the smallest file possible, if this is the case first UnZIP the file and then UnACE or unRAR it to extract the files!

Keep in mind that newer .ACE (v2.xx) packed files can not be extracted using older versions of WinACE, WinRAR or WinZIP. So if an .ACE archive fails to unpack try using the LATEST 2.xx version! The same also applies for the latest WinRAR!

Sometimes it happens that an .ACE file is downloaded with a .TGZ extension, just rename the file back to *.ACE as it can otherwise not be extracted using WinACE!

Use the software below to unpack these files:

Extension Application Version Vendor
.ZIP PKZIP for Windows 32 bit Latest PKWARE
WinZip Latest WinZip
.RAR WinRAR Latest RarSoft
.ACE WinACE Latest e-merge GmbH
If you still experience unpack problems then use the latest WinCommander as this multi functional tool is able to extract all available extentions without a problem!
Backup/Patch Facts
EURO/AUSTRALIAN Games
If a Patch or Executable is not available in your language then try one from another country as this usually will work. For example a SPANISH Patch usually also works for the ITALIAN & FRENCH versions of the game. Just do some trail & error!
CD-Reader
For some CD-Protections a good CD-Reader & CD-Writer is needed to be able to backup the game. The cheaper IDE CD-ROMs are just not able to copy sectors from a CD which contains errors. In most cases it is better to use the CD-Writer to read the CD as an image-file to harddisk and then burning the image-file to a CD-R. Checkout the Play/Backup Protected Game CDs section for more detailed information!
Copying Files
When copying files from a CD to harddrive then WinCommander is an extremely powerful file-manager. If you don't want to use WinCommander then make sure that the Folder Options in Explorer is set to Show all files to also show hidden files (View->Folder Options->View->Hidden Files).
Patching Files
When original files are being patched then make sure to have a backup of these files available before patching. Usually it is not possible to update a patched file to a newer version when they are modified! Then just replace the patched file with the backup of the original file and the update will work fine!
Write Protected Files
When a file is copied from a CD then it is Write Protected, this means that this file can not be modified or deleted. Some patches are not able to patch this protected file but this can easily be fixed. In explorer right-click the file and select Properties, now remove the Read-Only attribute and the write protection has been removed. Or in a Command Prompt (DOS Box) enter the following:  attrib -R file.exe
CD Protections
Since about 1999 most PC Games have been protected against making a backup. In Europe, Australia & Asia most games have been protected using the SafeDisc, SecuROM & LaserLok CD Protection. mostly because of US legislation, US games were usually not protected but currently they are using the same CD protection all over the world. As of 2000 about 95% of the protected game CD's are using the SafeDisc v2 CD Protection.

Checkout the CD Protections section @ Cyber-HOT-Line to get a complete overview of all available protections and how to deal with them.

There are currently a number of tools which are able to detect which CD Protection is being used on you original CD's!

Creating a Backup
It happens that there are no CD-Copy instruction available @ Cyber-HOT-Line. When a Fixed/No-CD Executable does exist then use the following instructions to make a backup:

CD-Copy Instructions (1 DATA Track):

Create the following temporary directory:
TempDirC:\TEMP\CD
Copy the full contents of the original CD to TempDir.
Replace the original main executable with the Fixed Executable or No-CD Executable.
Burn the contents of TempDir to a CD-R and use the same CD-Label as the original CD.
Remove/Clear the TempDir.
Play the game!
CD-Copy Instructions (1 DATA & 1+ AUDIO Tracks):
Create the following temporary directories:
TempDir#1C:\TEMP\CD
TempDir#2C:\TEMP\AUDIO
Copy the full contents of the original CD to TempDir#1.
Replace the original main executable with the Fixed Executable or No-CD Executable.
Extract all Audio/CDDA tracks to TempDir#2.
Create a Mixed Mode CD and burn the contents of TempDir#1 (DATA) & TempDir#2 (AUDIO) to a CD-R and use the same CD-Label as the original CD.
Remove/Clear the TempDir.
Play the game!

If it worked then contact us and tell how you did it so other users may benefit from it!!!

Also checkout the new Backup Protected Game CDs section which contains more detailed instructions how to make a backup of a specific protected CD.

Solving Download Problems
.RAR & .ACE Files
When downloading files with the extension .RAR or .ACE use Internet Explorer to download the file as older versions of NetScape corrupts the file as it doesn't know these file extensions.

Download Managers
The best way to download the files use a Download Manager like Go!zilla (free) or GetRight (US$ 20). These Download Managers can be used to download multiple files from multiple sources and most important they both can resume downloads (if the server supports this).

Solving Patch Problems
If you execute a patch and are getting errors like MSVBVM50.DLL not Found! then this patch is made using Visual Basic. To be able to use these patches a few files (DDLs) need to be copied to the windows directory:

Some of the Patches & Fixed Executables only work on Win9x/ME then there is no other way than to wait for a version which works on WinNT/Win2K/WinXP.

Grabbing AUDIO tracks
Game CD's usually consists of one DATA track and one or more AUDIO tracks. These AUDIO tracks are separate tracks on the CD and normally are not copyable using the copy command. Additional software is needed to grab/rip/extract these AUDIO tracks from CD to a WAV audio file. These WAV files can then be used for AUDIO tracks with any CD-Burn software.

The following software is capable of grabbing AUDIO tracks:

AudioGrabber
WinDAC32
EasyCD Creator
Nero Burning Rom

Also checkout the Game Copy Hints here for more detailed info on copying games.

CD-Writer Software
For ALL CD-Writer software, like Nero, CDRWIN, CloneCD, CD Wizard, EasyCD Creator & more, checkout the CD-Writer Software  section at Cyber-HOT-Line Links/Forums section.

Introduction

This article deals with how to make a working backup of a Protected Game CD or when this is not possible, because of hardware limitation, to at least be able to play a Protected Game CD from an imperfect backup.

It is still possible to create working Backups of most Copy Protected game CDs without the use of additional patches. The only thing required is a CD-Reader & CD-Writer which can read & write RAW DAO & Sub-Channel Data and software which supports writing in RAW Mode with Sub-Channel Data.

These software packages are:

bulletCloneCD
bulletBlindRead & BlindWrite
bulletDiscJuggler
bulletNero Burning Rom
bulletCDRWIN
bulletCD Mate

When it is not possible to select the RAW Mode then most likely the CD-Reader or CD-Writer does not support this mode. It is however still possible to make a backup but additional tools are required to remove the actually protection (see Non RAW Backups).

This article is far from being complete, a few utilities are missing or are not complete. If you have additional information please send it here!

Identifying a CD Protection

There are a few utilities available which can identify which CD Protection is being used on your game CDs.

CD Protection Detective
CD Protection Detector
CD Protection Scout
CloneCD Database
Clony XXL
Copy Protection Detection
PC CopyBase
TCCD
YaPS

The best tool availble is currently Clony XXL as it detects all available CD protections & is updated regulary!

Non RAW Backups

If your CD-Writer/Reader does not support RAW writing/Reading then it is not possible to make a 100% working standalone backup but it is still possible to play a backup using these utilities:

Executable Unwrappers
These tools are able to remove the CD Protection from the main executable which starts the game.

unSafeDisc v1.5.5 - SafeDisc
unSafeDisc v2.40.10 & 2.51.xx - SafeDisc v2
UnSecuROM v1.0 - SecuROM & SecuROM v2
Protection Emulators
These tools run in the background and intercept calls from the CD Protection to the CD-Reader, to check if the original CD is in the reader, and always tell that everything is ok.
PlayBackup v2.1 - SafeDisc v2, SecuROM & SecuROM v2
DAEMON Tools v2.80 - SafeDisc, SafeDisc v2, SecuROM, SecuROM v2 & LaserLock
InseKtors v1.1 - SafeDisc & SafeDisc v2
NOTE: The creators of the SafeDisc protection have added a "blacklist" feature into their protection to detect if one of the above Protection Emulators is active in memory. This can be the reason that a game is not working (even original CD's), just upgrade to the latest version (if available) or temporarily disable the emulator!

For example MaxPayne v1.01 was blacklisting DAEMON Tools v2.74 & PlayBackup v2.1. The MaxPayne blacklist problem was again fixed in DAEMON Tools v2.79. But keep in mind that this process will happen over and over again. It's just a cat & mouse game with every new version of the SafeDisc v2 protection!

CD-Writers supporting RAW DAO & Sub-Channel Data

Most of the Philips CD-Writers can handle any CD Protection, a lot of CD-Writer manufacturers have been using Philips drives in their own drives so these will also work fine. Here is an overview of the Philips CD-Writers to date:

Philips CDD3801 - IDE
Philips CDD4201- IDE
Philips CDD4401- IDE
Philips CDD4801- IDE
Philips PCA382RW - IDE - firmware 1.4
Philips PCRW804K - IDE
Philips PCR1208K - IDE
Philips 800 Series - IDE

The following CD-Writers can handle (almost) any CD Protection but not all of them:

Plextor PX-W1210TA [12x10x32x] - IDE
Use firmware 1.00, 1.01, 1.02 or 1.04 - Newer firmware will not work, downgrade if possible!
Plextor PX-W124TS [12x8x32x] - SCSI

Universal Backup Instructions [RAW Mode]

Here are the instructions to make a working backup of most Protected CDs using CloneCD 4.x.x.x in combination with a CD-Reader/CD-Writer which can both can handle DAO-RAW:

Create the following directory (if it exists already empty it):
<TempDir>:  C:\TEMP\CD
Create a CD-Image using CloneCD 4.x.x.x with these Game CD settings:
Data Read Settings Tab:
Set Read Speed Data to 1x (176 kByte/s)
Select Read SubChannel Data from Data Tracks (default)
Select Regenerate Data Sectors (default)
Audio Read Settings Tab:
Set Read Speed Audio to 1x (176 kByte/s)
Set Audio Extraction Quality to Medium (Fast) (default)
Select Read SubChannel Data from Audio Tracks (default)
UnSelect Only read the first Session (default)
Error Handling Tab:
Set Fast Error Skip to Automatic (default)
Set Sector Skip to 100 (default)
UnSelect Abort on Read Error (default)
Select Don't report read errors (default)
Select Intelligent Bad Sector Scanner (default)
When ready burn the modified CD-Image a CD-R using CloneCD 4.x.x.x with these Game CD settings:
Set Write Speed to any desired speed
Select Don't Repair SubChannel Data (default)
Select Always close last Session
Play the game!

Here are the instructions to make a working backup of most Protected CDs using CloneCD 3.x.x.x in combination with a CD-Reader/CD-Writer which can both can handle DAO-RAW:

Create the following directory:
<TempDir>:  C:\TEMP\CD
Create a CD-Image using CloneCD 3.x.x.x with these settings:
Set Read Speed to 1x (176 kByte/s)
Select Read SubChannel Data from Data Tracks
Select Read SubChannel Data from Audio Tracks
Select Fast Error Skip
Set Read Retry to at least 5
Set Error correction to None
UnSelect Don't report bad sectors
UnSelect Intelligent Bad Sector Scanner
When ready burn the CD-Image a CD-R using CloneCD 3.x.x.x with these settings:
Set Write Speed to any desired speed
Select RAW DAO
Select Don't Repair SubChannel Data
UnSelect Simulate Writing (if available)
Select Burn Proof/Just Link (if available)
unSelect Perform Laser Power Calibration
unSelect Wait until Buffers are full
Select Always close last Session
Play the game!
NOTE: CloneCD v4 includes a CloneCD Tray utility which is active when your startup your PC. This utility includes a feature Hide CDR Media which can be very helpful when playing a backup from a CD-Writer. Some games try to detect if they are run from a CD-R media and this tool let's them think it is an original CD.
Backup Hints

Here are some general hints when making a 1:1 CD-Copy:

Use your CD-Writer to also read the CD-Image - In most cases the CD-Writer can handle more protections!
To avoid coasters always make a CD-Image on harddrive before writing it to a CD-R.
Read the CD-Image at 1x or at a maximum of 8x speed. Reading the CD-Image at 1x speed takes a long time to complete but it is the safest speed to correctly read the image from any CD-Reader. Most modern CD-Readers can handle faster speeds. Just experiment!
CD-Writer software like Adaptec Easy CD Creator will NEVER be able to copy protected CDs and in most cases only interferes with other CD-Writers software! Software like CloneCD, Nero & CDRWIN are far better products!
Additional CD-Checks
The instructions shown on this page only show how to remove a CD-Protection, like SafeDisc or SecuROM, from the main executable but most of the games also have a CD-Check in the main executable. In this case the original or backup CD is required to play the game. No-CD Patches are needed to bypass the additional CD-Check(s).

Question(4):

-How many types of cd protection are out there?

Answer:

-Pay attention...

Introduction(.)
The last few years game developers more and more are protecting their games with commercial CD Protections. Until now none of these CD Protections have really helped, in some cases it even can work against you as some CD-ROM players can not handle the protection. So we have to wait before game developers get it that it is a waist of effort and money protecting CD's.

Now the music industry has hopped the bandwagon and now is selling protected audio CD's. These CD's can be backed up using a variety of methods but usually an easy 1:1 backup is not possible. This is exactly what they want, making it harder to make a backup so that people will buy the original. Only they did not think about the fair use laws which are common in most countries, which make it possible to create a backup for personal use!

As CD's are not 100% indestructible many people want to make a backup of their games. Using the backup to play the game thus saving the original. Especially when it involves children it is VERY handy to have them use a backup. Because of these CD Protections it is getting harder and harder just to make a working backup.

Keep in mind that in most countries you are legally allowed to make a backup of a CD which you legally own. Some gaming companies won't allow you to make a backup and use the argument that a broken (original) CD will be replaced, but in most cases the costs for replacing it is usually more then buying the game again!

This page contains a list of all known CD Protections which are currently on the market, how they can be detected and how to by-pass many of them.

There are currently a number of tools which are able to detect which CD Protection is being used on you original CD's, checkout the CD/DVD Utilities lists downloading our full archive catalog to locate them! This section also includes tools to create your own protected data & audio CD's!

CDRWIN last readable track error 06-12-1998
PSX PIRATE
The error about the last readable sector is one of those errors which occur with cdrwin which doesn't seem to make logical sense much like the warning about 4 second tracks. I have received many warnings about 4 second tracks with cdrwin although in many cases the shortest track on the disk wasn't even under 1 minute. In these cases cdrwin probably incorrectly interprets one of the 2 second pregaps as an actual track.

If Cdrwin displays the "GREEN mode 2 data track circle" do the following:

Right click on it and it should display the starting and ending time of the track and to the right of this the LBA which is the sector starting and ending "logical block address" (LBA). When you can see this you know that in can in fact read all the sectors from beginning to end and that this is a mistake on cdrwin's part.

I have never received this error with an original disk regardless of how poor of condition it was in. I have however received this message a few times when reading a copy of a copy. What I have done in these cases is one of the following things which has always worked: (The names to click on are the ones used in Cdrwin 3.4c. The newer versions may use different names.)

When you receive the error click finish again and see if it starts reading it. This will
often times work. If that doesn't work try ejecting the disk and reinserting it to refresh it and when you try again it may read it. Try adjusting the Read Retry Count - Specifies the maximum number of times to retry a failed read operation. This feature is not supported by all CDROM devices.

Finally as a last resort try rebooting your computer to clear any information from your system which may be causing the problem and try again.

How to handle Tracks Shorter than 4 Seconds 27-11-1998
PSX PIRATE
The first step is to choose no when it asks if you want to continue after the 4 second message.

Check the disc to see if the game really has any tracks under 4 seconds. 99% of the time you receive this message the disc won't contain any tracks under 4 seconds. You can right click on the "RED" audio buttons that appear after you select copy disc and that will tell you the length of that particular track or you can use your  computer's CD player and go down through the tracks to see there length.

If there isn't any tracks that are actually under 4 seconds go back and change the Analyze Subcode Option of "AUTO" which is the default setting to "FIXED" then repeat what you normally do. With fixed the audio subcode won't be analyzed like it is with the auto setting and cdrwin will immediately start to read the disc to hard drive without the warning appearing.

If the game does in that rare case contain a track under 4 seconds then you will have to edit the cuesheet in a specific way to get around this or you can use a sound editor to add enough extra time to the track so it will be larger than 4 seconds.

If you choose to continue after you see the warning without changing any settings then cdrwin will read the disk to an image file but when the cuesheet is loaded
in will be rejected and an error message will be displayed.

Windows 95 Caching

The following tip can greatly improve CDROM recording performance under Windows 95. This could prevent buffer underruns and other common problems from occurring.

By default, Windows 95 does excessive file caching. This is a waste of CPU time, memory, and possibly disk space, since you will never go back and use anything in the cache.

To fix this problem, do the following:
Open the file SYSTEM.INI with a text editor (this file will usually be found in C:\WINDOWS or C:\WIN95).
Find the section of the file called "[vcache]"
Add the following lines after the "[vcache]" line:
minfilecache=512
maxfilecache=4096
Save the file changes.
Reboot your PC.

File/Disc Caching

We strongly recommend that you enable the file/disc caching feature on the Devices and Settings screen. This feature will greatly reduce the possibility of "buffer underruns" and also make efficient use of your CPU and other system resources.

Description

File/Disc caching (also known as "cyclic buffering") is the most important performance feature that has been added to CDRWIN this year. It will greatly reduce the possibility of "buffer underruns" and also make more efficient use of your CPU and other system resources. On most systems, you will not be restricted from running other programs while a disc recording is in progress (even at 4x recording speed). Now you can use your word processor, Internet browser, or other favorite application while your disc records safely in the background.

Important Note: The performance of the cache is determined by the speed of your CPU, harddrives, SCSI adapters, and other critical system components. Don't expect miracles when using non-Pentium systems, old harddrives, or ISA based SCSI cards (especially when recording at 4x speed).

Cache Settings

Enable Caching - Enables the caching feature.

Enable Debug Log - Enables the debugging log file. This option should only be used if you are having a major problem with the caching feature (the debug information will be written to the file C:\THREAD.LOG). Please contact Golden Hawk Technology before using this option.

Cache Size - Selects the size of the cache in megabytes (the minimum size is 1Mb and the maximum size is 32Mb).

Recommended cache size based on the amount of memory on your system:

System Memory Recommended Cache Size:

16 Mb 1 to 2 Mb
32 Mb 2 to 4 Mb
64 Mb 4 to 8 Mb
128 Mb 8 to 16 Mb
256 Mb 16 to 32 Mb

Warning: Do not use cache sizes larger than the recommended size. This can cause performance problems that are worse than not using the cache at all.

Full to Empty Ratio - Selects the percentage of the cache that must be read before the cache is filled again. Example: If the ratio is set to 85% / 15%, then the cache will be filled to 100%, wait for 15% of the data to be read, and then be filled to 100% again (this cycle will repeat over and over again until there is no more data to be cached). This algorithm is much more efficient then trying to keep the cache completely full all of the time.

CPU Priority Level - Selects the CPU priority level of the caching thread. For 99% of all systems, the "Normal" setting is more than adequate.

Nero PSX CD-Copy Settings 17-11-1998
DTEMPLE [Source]
How to copy psx games with NERO

Unfortunately Playstation CDs are heavily copy protected. Nevertheless it’s possible to create backups of most Playstation games.

This is hat you need:
A MOD chip, which must be soldered into the Playstation.
A CD recorder capable of burning CDs using the „disc at once“ method.
About 700MB of free drive space to store a CD image file.

Proceed as follows:

  1. Start Nero
  2. Insert the Playstation CD in your recorder
  3. Choose the menu command File->CD Copy
  4. Select the page Copy Options and uncheck the on the fly option. Select your CD recorder as input device and choose (for safety considerations) 1x as read speed.
  5. Open the page Read Options and select (if these options are available for your recorder): „Read media catalog number and ISRC“, „Continue copying“, „Data Mode 1“: „Force Raw reading“ „Write uncorrected“, „Data Mode 2“: „Force Raw reading“ „Write uncorrected“, „Read audio with subchannel“, „Ignore read errors“ and uncheck „Jitter correction“.
  6. Open the Image page and choose a harddisk drive with at least 700MB of free disk space.

CDRWIN CD-Copy Settings 09-11-1998
PSX PIRATE
Q: I get a message that some tracks are too short for cdr specs and my Ricoh Writer refuses to accept the cuesheet
A: Under Subcode Options change the Analyze mode from the default of Auto to "FIXED". Instead of the audio subcode being analyzed which would normally happen with "Auto" it will begin reading the first data track which will avoid the warning about tracks under 4 seconds which in turn will cause the cuesheet to not be rejected.
Q: I am trying to burn a heavily scratched original copy of Marvel Superheroes using CDRwin in repair mode. Every time I copy the disk to the hard drive I get 3 errors. Since CDRwin is in repair mode and the game works fine in my Playstation, is it safe to burn a copy even with 3 errors? Any advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
A: According to the Cdrwin help file here is what occurs when you ignore and repair errors:

Ignore - Replace the unreadable sector with another unreadable sector and continue reading the disc. This option is only applicable to raw data sectors (for non-raw sectors, this option is identical to “Repair”). Note: Some recorders do not support the writing of unreadable data sectors (they will be corrected before being written to the disc).

Repair - Replace the unreadable sector with a readable one (the sector will contain all zeros) and continue reading the disc.

How is replacing an unreadable sector with a readable one unsafe? Both ignore and repair will produce a valid working copy. However when you try make a copy of that copy is when you will see why its best to use repair. If you used ignore when you try to read the copy to make another copy of it you will receive the exact same amount of errors as you did with the original disk because the errors were ignored. If there was hundreds or thousands of errors on the original as I have seen in the past then it will take a very long time to
read through all these errors. If you use repairall the original errors will be replaced with readable data and when you try to make a copy of the copy there will be no errors on it just like a new disc and it will read to an image file in a much shorter time.

Question(6):

-How safe is it to buy pirated software?

Answer:

-It is not safe at all. Don't forget that your credentials (address, phone numbers, emails) are with the trader's client list. If they catch the treader, there are good chances that you might be cought too.

Question(7):

-How and where can I find really low price illegal software. Where are the cheapest traders, where they sell the cheapest cracked titles around?

Answer:

-Usually look for classified ads (mikres agelies) in newspapers, magazines and at the internet.

Attention, bare in mind this. Cheap traders usually mean cheap people as well. Why? There's a lot of crime involved in this illegal trading business, besides piracy itself. Other important criminal acts directly involved with software piracy include Money Fraud (printing and exchanging fake money bills), credit card hacking, bank account hacking, email hacking, website pass and exploit hacking.

Even at the event of a simple, or multiple and usually unsuccessfull attempts, the .net servers are tracing and track the offender down in terms of his isp, his ip address "whois" and finally his personal account info that he is registered by his isp. Even if the offender is using a free isp service that he can give fake credentials.

Still very easy to track down his telephone number which he was connected to the random ip address that was used by the free isp at the specific day/time that the crime occured is enough to find him. Do never think that a secret or not listed telephone number used to connect to an isp means anything to the authorities.

Some other crimes, that cheap traders are involved in usually include: Hacking of smartcards (for digital tv platforms like HBO, NOVA etc.), hacking (OTE) telephone cards, the unlocking of stollen mobile phones and car stereo and much, much more.

Even if these traders are not involved into any of the above illegal acts, but they even have or had criminal records for things, not directly, having something to do with pirating, hacking, cracking and selling illegal software/hardware, like for example stealing cars and/or motos (papakia etc), then, if and when they're arrested for any of the above or other reasons, they will definetly search their premises, they will, of caurse find their pirated software archived, possibly their order and client books etc.

So, their clients will be accused for buying stollen products and quess what? YOU'LL BE ON THEIR CUSTOMER LISTS. You 'll, as their client, wil be involved in a criminal activity and that's not all. They 'll come right to you, searching your premises, this time, for stollen software and don't you think that your desktop hard drives and your closets and your desk drawers and your cabinets are so very much innocent. The 'll be full of these traders' illegal titles and stuff.

My advise, don't buy pirated software, you jeopardize your freedom and your wallet for fines, due to the reasons above. Besides, support the software companies, support the quality releases of cd and dvd titles. If you must buy illegal software be very carefull, you don't need cheap traders who don't take any precautions and you don't know about it either. Choose a reliable source who moves in secrecy not a bomb who might be involved in other activities as well. Buy from the oldest and the best in the scene.

Avoid to buy illegal. But if you must, then avoid to buy from small traders, safer traders are the ones having few and large (quantitywise) and respectible clients who return and buy stuff steady from them, instead of traders who have  a great number of small quantity clients (who buy a couple of titles each time), usually teenagers not steady clients at all.

Avoid less educated and impolite traders who talk like criminals, trying to hustle you around and are full of pride and confidance. Avoid being exposed very often to traders for your software needs, you do when you're visiting to buy a couple cd or dvd titles (one, or two per visit), rather, make rare but large in quantity orders). Be on the safe side, shop smart. Shoping cheap and changing traders around trying to find the cheapest source it's damn and will eventually get you in a lot of trouble in the future.

It's just not safe not to follow these guidelines.

Question(8):

-How do I use VideoCD and where do they play?

Answer:

The Video CD titles play in CDi Decks, Video CD Decks, PC (with Windows Media Player), Sony Playstation, Sony Playstation v2.0 and Sega Dreamcast.

Question(9):

-What do the MP3 concern musicwise?

Answer:

The MP3 concern International as well as Greek music.

Question(10):

-Allright I downloaded an .iso or .bin from a BBs or the internet what do I do know?

Answer:

- Happy Steps in maintaining a properly burned, error free version of a pirated piece of software.

1.) Leech the original rars (this is the only standard in releasing under compression).

2.) Open the xxxx.sfv file and make sure it is formatted correctly so that your appropriate cyclic redundancy checker can read it (win-sfv32.exe or pdsfv). Here's an example of a BAD SFV to use with win-sfv32.exe (however it works on Microsoft, Linux server systems and hoopy's pd-sfv, use gltpad hoopy iso toolkit or comparable checker).

Generated by HoopySFV

filename.r00 C46D96FF

filename.r01 1C03CA69

filename.rar 12550B24

Here's one that is GOOD to use with win-sfv32.exe.

Generated by SFV32 v1.0a

filename.r00 C46D96FF

filename.r01 1C03CA69

filename.rar 12550B24

or... ; Generated by WIN-SFV32 v1.1a on 1999-09-27 at 04:55.56

filename.r00 C46D96FF

filename.r01 1C03CA69

filename.rar 12550B24

*notice the semicolon indicating that this line is NOT part of the CRC checksum. The numbers/letters following filenames is the CRC code. DO NOT touch this, otherwise all your disks will be falsely interpreted as bad.*

3.) Open win-sfv32.exe, commonly referred to as WinSFV and browse through the explorer like interface and find the directory that you downloaded the original disks/rars from.

4.) Double click that directory or click the NEXT button while that directory is highlighted.

5.) Under the ACTION box, make sure the VERIFY FILES button is selected. Ignore all other options, as they are unnecessary in verifying the integrity of your disks/rars. Then click NEXT.

6.) This process will take approximately 3-5 minutes on an IDE harddrive and 1-3 minutes on a nice SCSI harddrive. Upon completion, files that are tested OK and have their CRC check comply will be highlighted in green, those that fail or are bad/corrupted will be in red. These disks are damaged, must be re-leeched, and TOTALLY irreparable.

7.) Assuming that all your disks are in good shape and you have all the disks (read the nfo or .sfv file to see what the file names of the disks are and how many there are) begin to decompress the files by selecting the xxx.rar or xxx.001 file to begin extracting from. Open up a window of winrar and guide its explorer-like view to find the dir and double click the xxx.rar or xxx.001 file. From there you can extract the file using winrar or suitable extraction/decompressing program. This process is lengthy; go do something else for about 10 minutes other than staring at your monitor and absorbing harmful UV radiation ;). CiFE and FLT have been known to use .001 disks instead of .rars. 15,000,000 bytes is the most common size of a disk, whereas 20,000,000 are less common but often found in many PSX releases.

8.) Once fully extracted you will

a.) have a .bin and .cue sheet or

b.) end up with a piece of shit called a .iso file. Something you don't want due to no coding for ecc data among other things. If in the sad chance that it is a .iso file, use NERO, EZ-CD CREATOR, OR DISK JUGGLER (I recommend ez cd creator since this seems to be many releaser's choice) to burn the image by selecting an option something along the lines of "burn cd from a cd image." NOTE that you cannot test the integrity of an .iso file. If, however, you get a legitimate and quality release that is a bin file, you must

a.) burn at your own risk without testing the integrity of the .bin (Intel binary file) using binchunker v1.6 or later or

b.)test the bin (DATA ONLY) and burn happily

9.) Now you must make sure the cue sheet is in proper order for burning. here's an example of a BAD CUE SHEET. ...from Scooby.Doo.The.Mystery.Of.The.Fun.Park.Phantom-FLT...

--->>> You can opt to take out the quotation marks or leave them in; it's entirely your decision.

NOTE: more responsible releasers will do this part FOR YOU. So you may be able to skip this step.

10.) After completion of this step you can either test the integrity of the data ONLY or skip this and burn ASAP.

10a.) To burn ASAP load up CDRWIN or FIREBURNER. In CDRWIN, click the upper left box (record disc). Then go to load cuesheet, find where you unrar/decompresed the original disks/rars (location of xxx.cue file), and open it. Once the cue sheet is loaded CDRWIN will give pertinent information regarding the cd image. Information like cdimage size in minutes, seconds, and frames and number of tracks. NOTE: if the cd image size is over 74:00:00 (minutes:seconds:frames) then you must use an 80minute cd and/or have a cdr capable of burning more than 74minutes (overburning/oversizing a disk). Then hit the START RECORDING button. While a cd is burning do not run any other programs in risk of a buffer underrun. However, this problem is not serious when you have a P2-300+ and more than 64 MEGS of PC100 SDRAM.

11.) If you're nit picky and just can't stand having an impure cdimage, test the integrity of the xxx.bin file. To do this you need binchunker 1.6 (also available in the files section of isonews.com). DO NOT use binchunker 1.7 to test the data integrity of a bin file. On a lighter note, you can use 1.7 to convert to .wavs and .iso. Open up binchunker and select FILE->LOAD CUE. Find your ALREADY EDITED CUE SHEET from step 9 and open it. Once opened it will give information about the number of tracks, etc about that particular .bin file (some contain data, audio, or both. VCD's often contain TWO tracks. The only track of importance is TRACK2, which contains the AVI sequence <audio and video data read by a vcdplayer>). Select the appropriate track you want to test (often the first track is the data track on apps/game cd images); data for apps/game isos, TRACK2 for vcd images, and TRACK1/2 for PSX images. Lastly, go to FILE->SCAN FOR CORRUPTION option and wait for a few minutes until its completed. The status bar is directly adjacent to the SELECT ALL bottom. NOTE that you cannot test the integrity of an audio track. This is ONLY done by selecting the respective audio track and going to FILE->CONVERT, choosing .wav option, and saving that .wav as a file. Open the .wav file with any audio player (winamp or windows media player) and listen to the file. Unfortunately this is a very cumbersome process.

12.) Once binchunker has fully tested the integrity of the xxx.bin file, it will either say:

    a.) Scanning Track 1...

Question(11):

-How do I learn more about SFVs?

Answer:

SFVs

1. WHAT ARE THEY? a. FAQ 2. CRASH COURSE PLEASE... a. CHECKING b. MAKING 3. CRC32? a. WHATS THAT? b. ISNT THERE A BETTER ALGORITH c. source code -> http://www.cyber-hot-line.gr 4. MISC a. FIRST LINE PROBLEMS b. COMMENTS c. FTPDs d. SHORT FAQ Q: How do I uncompress a .sfv file? Q: WinSFV error: "Unable to identify the type of the input file"? Q: Is WinSFV the best? What is better? Q: Are SFV files only pirate's tool? Q: But RARs implement CRC32 checks, why sfv files?

1. WHAT ARE SFV FILES?

SFV (Simple File Verificator) files are used to ensure if files are:
- not corrupt
- not missing

For example, with RARs its important that we got all the parts and that none of the RAR files is corrupt... If it is RAR will tell us (if its new RAR that is). However to know that rar file 020 is corrupt we need to have previous 19 files to test... SFV allows us to test any file at any time without the need to have other files.

Further more for mp3s we might never notice a file missing (afterall, other songs will play allright) but thanks to sfv its easy to spot which file is missing.

2. CRASH COURSE

a. CHECKING

Using your SFV checker point to SFV file on which to base your checking. Some SFV checkers then will ask you which files you want to test, usually we say all files, but sometimes there is a need to test just one file (ie: after testing all files we see that one file was screwed, after redownloading we just want to check that single file, not the whole release, for corruption).

Then somewhere you click next or process or check button which will check all files for you and in the end report to you:
1. which file is ok
2. which file needs to be redownloaded
3. which file is missing

based on that you can know what to do next...

ps: most people use sfv checking on their ftps and it can be that you could have downloaded hundreds of files without the need to rely on sfv...

B. MAKING

Many release packagers will create an sfv for you (ie: Morgoth's MP3Releaser) however, most sfv checkers should be able to create sfv files (since it is the same algorithm).

Usually you head to create/generate sfv file section, mark the files which are to be included in sfv check (all the rars/nfo/mp3s) and click a button to generate.

The program could ask you for filename of the sfv file...

3. CRC32?

a. WHATS THAT?

CRC32 stands for an algorithm: Cyclic Redudancy Check and 32 represents how many bits does the final calculation represents. The algorithm is a sped up way of finding remainders of division...

say we got a number: 123 and we divide it by 5... the answer is: 24 + 3... the 3 is the remainder..
when we divide it by 5, we know the remainder is between 0-4

Say we got a number: 12342878729874120987 and we divide it by 7.. the remainder is 6..

now lets assume the contents of a file (a file is basically bits and bytes which are just numbers) are the number we want to divide... and we remember just the remainder..

The remainder will be your crc number...

But you will say: "its impossible to divide a number with 15,000,000 digits that fast, otherwise we would be cracking all those credit card numbers..." well, we are not really dividing, we are just trying to find out the remainder.. and we dont call sfv a remainder algorithm but Cyclic Redudance Check afterall... This has to do with the way HOW simple the CRC can be calculated (simple being relative term)..The thing is that its just a simple set of XOR gates and left shift operations..

Thats why CRC check is so popular, it can be easily implemented in the hardware... thats why RARs, Zips, Arjs, Internet:TCP use it... ;D

b. ISNT THERE A BETTER ALGORITH

Ahh.. the old age question... Yes there are better algorithms... you see, CRC32 generates 32bits... 32bits are not enough to ensure that our 15meg file is unique..
You see, 32 bits gives us 4,294,967,296 bit combinations, while simple 15meg file has of them: 5,287*10^3084 (thats in scientific notation, it means the number has 3084 digits)

as you can see there are many different 15meg files and there is a possibility that our CRC32 will generate same code for two completly different files..

However this is not really a problem.. Usually when files get corrupt they dont have ALOT of changes being made (few bits/bytes) which are not enough to be corrupt and still generate a valid code... Another thing that saves us is that we generate SFV files on relatively small files (15megs) not complete isos (700meg)...

But as I said, better algorithms do exist... For example large files (actually, irony, linux Isos) are verified with md5 algorithm as opposed to sfv... MD5 uses 128 bits plus has better avalanching than crc32 (this means even a single bit of difference will make significant impact on the output)... Why is md5 not used? sfv became popular, md5 is catching on however, but has not as wide use as md5.

Futher reading recommended:

RFC 1320 is about the MD4 Message-Digest Algorithm.
RFC 1321 is about the MD5 one.

Also you might want to head to local bookstore and take some Compression books (crc checks are used in compressions alot) and Networking books (again, CRC is popular).. Also books on descrete math might be a good help (data integrity issues, and data mapping spread, error detection, automatic error correction). Local university/College is always a plus... ;D

b. COMMENTS

if you looked into sfv file (sample at 4.a) you will notice that there are lines starting with a semicolon... This line indicates that it is NOT part of the CRC checksum...

Whatever is a comment usually can be deleted (check 4.A first line problems).. However there are two camps of what should be contained in the sfv comments..

As one, you could put there your info making your sfv look like:
/--------------------------
| ; Generated by WIN-SFV32 v1.1a on 1999-09-27 at 04:55.56

| ; get it if you only have the nerve...
\__________________________
Some sfv checkers (usually ftpd based) have options to remove such comments as well as to put our own comments instead... ;D

The other camp says we should include more information about the files just in case... so we end up with:

Some sfv checkers can use this additional information to speed up checking.. (aka: whats the point of checking a 14meg file when we need a 15meg?)..

c. FTPDs

Some ftpds (the better ones) support checking files on upload against sfv files.. This way as files are being uploaded the ftp checks for us if the upload is complete.. If upload is complete we might not want to allow any further uploads into that directory... When a file is corrupt we might want NOT to give credits to the user (this is assuming the user is on ratio), and we might want to notify the person uploading to reupload...

So which ftps do it? As of writting this most popular Windows based ftpd is gene6 and warftpd 1.6.. both support crc sfv checking through addons which can be found on the net with a bit of dedication..

glftpd has the best support for scene features (sfv/sitebot/stats/nukeing/etc) however you would need to run linux in order to run glftpd..

For more on this please wait for the ftpds faq to be published..

4.d. SHORT FAQ

Q: How do I uncompress a .sfv file?
A: You don't. SFV is merely used for verification of other files

Q: WinSFV error: "Unable to identify the type of the input file"?
A: Its the famous
First Line problem, please visit section 4.a for more data on this

Q: Is WinSFV the best? What is better?
A: Not everything that got 'win' infront of its name is really good... Sure WinAmp and WinCMD are good, but for example WinZip is not considered good by many. Similiarly WinSFV does not share same glory as my other sfv checkers... There are checkers optimized for speed (QuickSFV and FastSFV), there are sfv checkers for ftps which generate crc32 code on upload (glftpd's flysfv), there are checkers that do single files only (glftpd's sfv_check) there are checkers designed to do complete releases nicely (pdsfv, asfv) and in general many others... The only recomendation I can give is to get few of them and try them out and see which one you like the best... You will like some for speed, others for interface, others for features... Ps: Must warn you that winsfv is famount for

Q: Are SFV files only pirate's tool?
A: This is a common misconnception.. Many people assume that if something is used by pirates it otherwise has no use... MP3s are for pirates, no one cares that its a great compression algorithm and has millions of other uses... Many small radio stations because backups are expensive, first mp3 their shows for future references... Similiarly, many consider divx to be illegal format, even though many amateur artists use it because its just a perfectly viable tool...
Similiarly, SFV files are just a handy way to ensure that file transfer went ok... if you are an ISP wondering wether you should ban SFV files because it would promote piracy should think again... SFV file should be supported by isps to ensure images and html files are sent properly... How many times have I seen amateur artists upload 20meg movies just to be next day greeted by 200 emails complaining that the files are corrupt... /end rant

Q: But RARs implement CRC32 checks, why sfv files?
A: There are two issues with RAR... First the old one:
A1: RAR has a nasty habit of not creating a checksum in each file of a multivolume archive. This makes it impossible to find out wich archive is broken in a set. SFV makes this possible by generating this "missing" crc value for each file, if a volume set is broken simply check it against its checksum table to find out what files are broken and then reobtain the file once again to fix upp the error.
A2: SFV works faster than RAR and therefore can subsitute RAR when testing to se wether or not a complete set is ok.
A3: you can use SFV for any file, not just RAR... ie: SFVs are popular in the mp3 scene as well..
